In December 2007, Artemio and two of his friends were traveling by bus through Syracuse, New York on their way to their homes in Mexico. Rather than celebrating Christmas with their families, however, the three men were arrested by immigration agents at a bus station. They were then detained at a county jail before being transferred to the ICE facility in Batavia, New York, and eventually deported to Mexico.

Traveling is Not a Crime!

Border Patrol and ICE agents have established a regular presence on buses, trains and at the Regional Transportation Center and stations in Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo.

By racial profiling, or by asking all travelers for proof of citizenship, the civil rights of undocumented and documented immigrants as well as US citizens are being ignored while creating a climate of fear in Central New York and throughout the country.

Amtrak and Greyhound have taken to a policy of complicity in these actions, frequently calling in agents to the station or tipping them off ahead of time.

Know Your Rights & Witness Campaign

The Overground Railroad Know Your Rights & Witness Campaign aims to highlight the injustices of enforcement-only immigration policy. Traveling is a human right.

Live outside of Central New York?
Many travelers have been questioned and arrested by Border Patrol while passing through Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo on their trip. Far from home, those who can not produce current documents proving their immigration status are then detained at the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility or other contracted facilities.
