Film Showing: Nov 9
Click to view full size imageThe Detainment Task Force (DTF) invites you to dinner and a movie on Sunday, Nov. 9th at 4:30. We will be watching Under the Same Moon (La misma luna) at Plymouth Congregational Church, located downtown at 232 E Onondaga St. Under the Same, in Spanish with English subtitles, tells the story of Carlitos who sets out to cross the Mexican border and find his mother in Los Angeles. The movie shows the real face of the undocumented as people struggling to make ends meet and provide a future for their kids under the immense obstacles of our nations backward immigration laws.
This event is meant to bean opportunity for folks to talk about what has been going on regionally and nationally in the struggle for immigrant justice and to discuss ways in which we, the collective, caring WE the PEOPLE, can stand in solidarity for hard working people coming to our area who are often exploited by employers and abused by this countries justice system.
In Central New York, a very high number of undocumented workers work in the agricultural sector, tilling fields, harvesting the onions, apples, and other vegetables that we enjoy. Those that have been following this issue, are probably aware that in countless instances, Immigration and Customs Enforcements (ICE) officials have been harassed and abused workers in rural communities all over CNY and all over the country. They break into people’s homes, detain people illegally, humiliate them publicly, and stalk them at church and at the grocery stores. Possibly the most serious result of the raids and detentions is the break up of families, especially when children are separated from their parents.
After the movie, which is about 100 mins long, we will share a meal and have a discussion about what we can do in our community to further the struggle for justice in our community.
