About

The Detention Task Force is a project of the Workers’ Rights Center, an initiative of the Central New York Labor-Religion Coalition. We are an all-volunteer organization, and welcome people to join our work. Our meetings are held Friday mornings, 9 a.m. at the Workers’ Rights Center, 232 E. Onondaga Street, Syracuse, NY. (315) 474-4821.

Goals of the Detention Task Force

  • We oppose the expansion and use of immigrant detention centers. We want to end the use of detention and deportation as keystones of US migration policy.
  • We stand in solidarity with immigrants in detention centers, and we fight for their release. While detention centers remain used, we will continue to draw attention to the inhumane conditions of detention.
  • We stand in solidarity with immigrants and support the organizing efforts of immigrant communities to empower themselves. We support immigrant communities’ struggles, and work with immigrant communities to build power for social change.
  • We want a just migration policy – including measures to reunite families, clear the visa backlog, provide a pathway to citizenship, and strengthen worker and civil rights – not increased enforcement practices.

Current Project Areas

  • The Overground Railroad Bail & Accompaniment Project facilitates bail for migrants who have been detained, humanitarian support for detainees and their families, and connects detainees with legal aid.
  • The Overground Railroad Know Your Rights and Witness Campaign aims to highlight the injustices of enforcement-only immigration policy. Traveling is a human right.
  • Movement Building efforts educates the public, supports the self-organization of immigrant communities; and builds local, regional, national, and international immigrant rights networks and their capacity to push for immigrant justice.
